Malama Honua is a Hawaiian expression, meaning to take care of the Earth and all of her inhabitants.  Hawaii, and specifically the island of Maui has held my heart for many decades.

The culture, language, terrain, vibration, and serene beauty have long called to me over the years.

Maui is wondrous, and I feel one of those precious places where you can feel the Aloha in the air and see it everywhere you go in the culture.  It is a place that makes you feel the whole world is your Ohana (family).

Wildfires are devastating no matter where they are, and I hope one day we will figure out how to prevent them. My heart breaks every time I hear of one as I am sure yours does too.  If you are wanting to send aid to Maui, here are a few good places.

In addition, as you know any small steps we all take can help our environment, our home, and hopefully bring about less wildfires and other climate disasters in the future.

There is an organization: Ecosia – my father mentions in his email below.

This is a simple act of using Ecosia instead of Google for your search engine.  This organization plants trees for every certain number of searches.  They have planted almost 200 million trees to date.

My fathers recently started a monthly email to help break down everyday living into more sustainable choices. Here is his email from this month below where he mentions Ecosia:

Grandparents, Family and Friends!

Thank you for your overwhelming response to my 7-26-2023 email encouraging us to create a proud climate legacy for our children and grandchildren which speaks to our deep love of both family and planet.
Thanks to you, today’s email now reaches over 200 strong and each time you forward it to “more than one friend”, we achieve exponential, impactful growth.

If you believe that “necessity is the mother of invention” then this Barack Obama quote may resonate: ” We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last that can do something about it.”

Please consider the following:

  • Fact: “The increase in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere is threatening civilization.”
  • Fact: “At the end of 2021, the global concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased by more than 25% in the past 50 years.”
  • Fact: “99.5% of climate scientists concur that this 25% increase is man-made”
  • Fact: “The average carbon footprint of a U.S. citizen (16 tons)  is FOUR times bigger than the global average (4 tons)”.
  • Fact:  “In order to reverse this devastating trend and preserve the climate we ALL depend on, we must dramatically reverse direction in the next TEN years”.

Here is what we can all do starting today: “Ecosia” is a free on-line search engine that is just as fast and easy to use as Google.   Please visit: www.carbonalmanac.org/search to install a simple extension that plants a tree every time you do a minimum number of web searches. Almost 200 million trees were planted last time I looked.

If everyone switched to “Ecosia”, they could plant enough trees to absorb all the carbon dioxide produced by all the cars on the planet.  This equals approximately 11% of carbon dioxide energy emissions worldwide.

Sharon and I have made the switch from Google to Ecosia.  It is easy (takes less than two minutes), it is free and it makes a difference every day. I hope you will consider this as your first powerful step in marrying “Grand H.O.P.E with Action.
